Hopara is now open source

Entrepreneurship is challenging, you’re often unsure what the best course of action is. Target enterprise or SMB? Invest in paid advertising or content? Go for open source or closed source?

In the early days of Hopara we decided to go for closed source. Despite being a bunch of nerds, willing to share their work with as many people as possible, that seemed a way to have a business model and keep the company in the long run.

Looking back, we’d probably do things differently. We now see that being closed source limited the amount of feedback and lessons that we could have learned from the community. Feedback that comes not only from paying and enterprise users, but also from ordinary people trying new things and working on small projects.

Looking forward, we decided to open source Hopara. Thousands of hours of engineering work and support for a variety of use cases are now available to anyone building digital twins to improve their operations.

Back to the business model, we kept our SaaS offering and developed an enterprise version with AI features and improved memory management for large scale deployments.

I hope that in a few years, we look back and see that this was the best for the community and for the company.
